What would our lives be like without colour??? It doesn’t bear thinking about really!
So what is colour?
Colour is simply light of varying wavelengths and frequencies.
I remember, as a teenager, coming across a book called ‘The Luscher Colour Test’. I know, weird choice of book at that age, but I guess I was fascinated by colour even then. Anyway, the Luscher Colour Test is a psychological test invented by Dr. Max Luscher in 1969. The esteemed psychologist believed that personality traits could be identified based on one’s choice of colour. There are two versions of the test. The complete version consists of 73 coloured cards and one has to make 43 selections in this test. The shorter version consists of only 8 cards and is supposed to be just as accurate. There are lots of versions of the shorter test available on the net and you might find it fun to do, perhaps it might even be an accurate assessment of your personality?
The practice of using colour as a therapy is thought to date back thousands of years to the ancient cultures of Egypt, China and India. According to www.irishhealing.ie “Each of the seven main colours of the spectrum resonates with one of the seven main chakra’s. Colour therapy helps to re balance blocked energy through the use of the appropriate colour vibration to stimulate the energy centre”.
When we are unwell we will often say “we are off colour” and it’s an indication that parts of our body are not functioning at their proper frequencies. Also, when you think of the way we describe certain emotions (seeing red, feeling blue, green with envy) there’s no doubt that colour and mood are inextricably linked. Have a look at the wheel below and you will see clearly how each colour is aligned with an emotion.
Colour plays such an important role in our lives and I think sometimes we take it for granted. Take a moment to look around you. Yes, really …. How many thousands of colours and shades of colours are there within ten feet of you? Colour is tremendously powerful, it can lift our mood, bring us joy, make us happy.
At Amanda Christie Designs, we are fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful colours everyday in the form of our contemporary lampshades. We like to challenge the status quo of neutral shades. We believe that we can elevate the humble lampshade to a thing of beauty, by bringing colour and hopefully joy into people’s lives.
“The purest and most thoughtful minds are those which love colour the most“. John Ruskin, The Stones of Venice.
